Legend of the Wolf (1997)

Legend of the Wolf (Vietnamese title: The Legend of the Wolf) is a Hong Kong martial arts action film directed by and starring Donnie Yen. Released in 1997, the film not only marked a turning point in Donnie Yen's directing career but also left a strong impression on viewers with its unique filming style and eye-catching, creative martial arts scenes.

The film's plot tells a legend revolving around a mysterious warrior, known as "The Wolf Man", a legendary assassin living in the chaotic post-war period. A curious young man seeks out the old man - who is actually this legendary character - to hear about his past.

The story is gradually revealed through flashbacks, taking the audience back to the war years, where the young man Kit (played by Donnie Yen) was once a lost, kind warrior but was forced to confront the darkness to survive.

One of the highlights of Legend of the Wolf is its unique storytelling style, interweaving the present and the past, creating mystery and drama for the film. At the same time, the fighting scenes in the film are staged very creatively, bearing the mark of Donnie Yen with fast, decisive martial arts moves, combined rhythmically with slow-motion effects, creating a feeling that is both realistic and artistic.

In addition to the action element, the film also brings profound humanistic messages. Through the story of "The Wolfman", the audience feels the cruelty of war, the loss of love and trust, as well as the process of internal struggle to retain a bit of humanity in a bloody world.

Legend of the Wolf is not only a normal martial arts film but also a poetic and emotional film. Although it did not achieve "huge" revenue like modern blockbusters, the film has become a memorable mark in Donnie Yen's career and is highly appreciated by martial arts cinema lovers. It is a harmonious combination of martial arts, storytelling and psychological depth – what makes Legend of the Wolf “legendary”.
