Jiu Jitsu (2020)

Jiu Jitsu (2020) is a dramatic action-sci-fi film directed by Dimitri Logothetis, inspired by the comic book of the same name that he co-wrote. Starring Alain Moussi, Nicolas Cage, Tony Jaa and Frank Grillo, the film offers audiences a cinematic experience rich in martial arts mixed with unique mystical and sci-fi elements.

The plot of Jiu Jitsu revolves around Jake Barnes (played by Alain Moussi), an elite warrior who loses his memory after a fierce encounter. He gradually discovers that he is part of a mysterious martial arts group, with a lifelong mission: to fight against an alien creature called Brax, who appears on Earth every six years through an ancient space portal. If the group of warriors cannot defeat Brax, he will destroy the entire planet. With the help of his old teammates, including an eccentric warrior named Wylie (played by Nicolas Cage), Jake must regain his memory and skills to complete his life-or-death mission.

The highlight of the film is the elaborate martial arts action scenes. With the participation of real martial artists such as Tony Jaa and Alain Moussi, Jiu Jitsu brings eye-catching fights, combining many different martial arts styles such as jiu-jitsu, muay thai, karate and kendo. Although the plot is somewhat absurd and entertaining rather than artistically profound, the film still maintains an attractive pace thanks to continuous fighting scenes and visual effects that are very much like action games.

An interesting point is the way the film combines traditional martial arts culture with science fiction elements. Jiu Jitsu is not just a martial arts film, but also expands into an epic story about honor, loyalty and the war between humans and supernatural forces.

Although not highly appreciated in terms of script and acting, especially with a simple storytelling style, Jiu Jitsu is still a choice worth considering for those who love the sci-fi action film genre. The film does not focus on philosophy but mainly aims at entertainment, true to the spirit of pure "martial arts blockbusters". With dramatic confrontations, diverse characters and a strange fantasy world, Jiu Jitsu (2020) is a work that, although not perfect, still brings excitement to viewers.
